Maru Mushtrieva (b. Kysyl-Syr, Yakutia) is a multidisciplinary artist and cultural worker based in Berlin and Brussels. With a diverse practice spanning across performance art, sound installations, and collaborative projects, their work explores themes of identity, social dynamics, hosting, material storytelling and the intersection of extractive practices and technology with contemporary society and environment.
A specific focus in her practice holds working with small-scale, fragile and intimate formats.
Taking text as a point of departure, she is interested in putting it into dialectical relation with other media and exploring its capacities in space. This attempt to look at the text production outside of the traditional literary practices led her to multiple collaborations with artists, choreographers, filmmakers, and musicians, as well as defined a direction for her curatorial work.
She worked as a researcher/co-writer for choreographic pieces (Ula Sickle, Begüm Erciyas) and as a guest lecturer in media theory at Academy of Art Berlin Weißensee. She is a co-founder of au JUS artist space run collectively through role play and collective practices in Brussels, as well as a co-founder of international artistic cooking collective Boiling Room that hosts encounters with people escaping the wars or political persecution in their countries.
