hopscotch revisited (2017)
Interactive sound installation. Concept, text, and production: Maru Mushtrieva
hopscotch revisited maps itself as a life simulation device on the old school game and practices finding predictions in any narrative. In this particular case, few divinations were blended together: by counting crows (an old magpie rhyme), by hopscotch, and by chance.
One is always looking for a decent dose of positive life-changing experiences. The game invites you to rediscover the object of desire in its nomadic nature, to turn it around, or get off the grid. Hopscotch is a poetic and subjective exploration of contemporary blended and dispersed desires that takes its references from recent political and economic events.
While most yard games use coded narratives as a means of interpretation of reality, it is concurrently a tool to simplify things. A zone of obstacles to be crossed, a zone of rest, departure, and arrival points in hopscotch revisited become mere spatio-temporal markers of effectiveness, productivity, and sense construction.
Having in mind gamification tendencies in the working environment, this practice frowns upon the hidden underlying intention of productivity enforcement and solution-oriented approach in everyday life. While you are becoming a part of a machine that is oriented on the value extraction, where the link between the task and its implementers (plural!) gets washed away, dispersed and un-locatable, take a stand and take a break as the best games do.
