Corporeal Montage: Textures and Surfaces (2018)
workshop by Maru Mushtrieva, 4 hours
The workshop “Corporeal Montage: Textures and Surfaces” was held in the frames of Hidden Agency ∞OS & Guests: Summer Camp and Open Space for Body-Based Practice and as part of the public program curated by Isabelle Lewis of Welt ohne Außen exhibition at Martin-Gropius-Bau Museum in July 2018 Berlin.
Based on the principles of martial art practice and the theoretical framework of textual montage, this workshop was an attempt to establish a playful reciprocal bind between physical practice and theory.
Bodies become a playground for the actualization of montage figures referencing their corporeal origin – jumping over, twirling, sliding, sounding, rotating, circling, and drifting.
In their turn, these principles could be understood as instructions for the material transformation, and, in particular, for text production. Inspired by Russian Formalism this workshop delivers an experimental reading of its ideas and looks at the montage figures mentioned above through a set of physical exercises and word/voice games in order to find a correlation between movement and text production.
